how about a linear parabolic reflector, 8' deep and 8' tall, aimed at
the equator? you might cut 1/4" kerfs 2.5" deep in some 12' 2x4s and
bend them until they close. a 16" arm at right angles to the curvy end
can reduce the force required and reduce the max/min bending moment
ratio from 5.2 to 1.7. you might steam the bows or use galvanized 
strapping to keep them bent.
