mine dimly light up about 6' away, placed to shine along a white
surface, eg up a wall. i use about 6 to ensure i can always see
at least 2 for triangulation in the dark.

they are getting cheaper, $6.99 in 3-packs at home depot(?)
a full-time 4-watt bulb uses about $4/year at 10 cents/kwh.
