the real problem is air leakage. winter dryness is a symptom. airtight
houses build up humidity in wintertime, since humans and their activities
evaporate about 4 pounds of water per person per day. imo, the solution
is caulking and air-sealing vs humidification, ie conserving vs wasting
heat energy.
winter has finally arrived near phila. the humidity in my neighbor's house
(which is fairly airtight, after a thorough air-sealing with 2 blower door
tests) has been increasing, up to 71% a few days ago, with condensation on
the inside of the windows. yesterday i attached her 120v de-humidifier to an
off-peak dryer outlet (240v @ 5 cents/kwh) with a modified extension cord.
uncodey but economical, especially since 1 kwh of electrical energy makes
1.6 kwh of house heat, as determined with a measuring cup and a wattmeter.
it's 37.4 f and 51% rh outdoors now, and the indoor rh is down to 65%.
