maybe not. i lived with a big old one-pipe-steam coal boiler converted to
oil. added a grate and burned 6 cords of wood per year, along with the oil,
which never popped the (1 psi?) safety valve, since the house thermostat
turned off the burner when the house got warm, but i popped it often by
overfiring the boiler with wood.
it had a slow leak. i finally killed it when i noticed the oil burner had
been running for a long time, but the house wasn't warm yet. went down to
the basement, saw there was no water in the sight glass, opened the valve
to add cold water to the hot cast iron boiler, and "clank, hssss, dribble,"
that's all she wrote...
