len says straw costs $5/ft^2, but 12" structural insulated panels (plywood-
foam-plywood sandwiches) are about the same price (per square foot of wall),
with comparable (r48) insulation and a lot less labor and widespread code
acceptance. they might even be dismantled and moved.

for $11.5k, we might have 12 8'x24' sips for a 24'x48' shell at $10/ft^2 per
square foot of floorspace, plus windows and doors. can the sips be varnished
inside and out as a final finish? the u mich arch dean says yes, and says a
lot of the younger profs like the look.

sips are fast, with wiring and plumbing in predrilled holes. slabs are cheap,
but so are sips on piers, with more insulation, and given alternative systems,
we might not need the usual septic system, water supply or utility lines.
