let's be fair. george mentioned an alternative. if he wanted to measure the
power consumption of an 11 w cf bulb to say, 1% with a house meter with 1 kwh
resolution, he might turn off everything else in the house and wait till the
meter reading increased by 100 kwh, after 100kwh/11w = 9091 hours, ie about
379 days. he could then proceed with the next appliance.
this might go faster if he kept a diary with frequent meter readings and noted
the exact times when every appliance in the house was turned on an off, for
a year or so. given such a huge detailed list, george could surely develop
a spreadsheet to analyse it and estimate the energy usage of each individual
appliance to within 1%.
