you might try replacing the roof with a single layer of clear flat or
corrugated 0.020" replex (800) 726-5151 or dynaglas (408) 997-6100
polycarbonate plastic, which is used for commercial greenhouse roofs.

my 600 ft^2 steep south dynaglas roof is 2 years old, having been through
golf-ball sized hail, etc. it was made from standard 51" wide x 12' long
pieces overlapped by 2 lengthwise corrugations. a neighbor in the roofing
business admired the labor requirement while watching the carpenter screw on
the large sheets with no sheathing or felt. it costs about $1/ft^2 and has a
10-year light transmission guarantee, with a 20-year expected mechanical life.
the north gable roof of my attic has no insulation yet, unlike the floor.
it's a nice bright space during the day, which gets up to about 120 f in
winter sun, and an interesting place to watch thunderstorms at night.
