the south side? the max summer sun elevation is 90-32.1+23.5 = 81.4 degrees
in tucson, so a 20' tree would only cast a 20/tan(81.4) = 3' shadow. hanging
a horizontal layer of 60% greenhouse shadecloth above might work better. it
looks like window screen. you'd still see the sun and sky.
