i've seen new solar water heating panels for sale for $40/ft^2, in a box,
before adding the cost of installation, insulated pipes, heat exchangers,
anti-freeze, pumps and the energy needed to run them.
but $1/ft^2 plastic film sunspaces made from standard greenhouse components
can also add valuable floorspace to a house. they might contain something
like big fins, bare uninsulated solar collectors made from 12" wide, thick
brown-painted aluminum roof flashing clamped to 3/4" copper pipes like this:
-----u-----, with a warm water thermosyphoning loop through a pressurized
insulated tank above, to make hot water for an extra $1/ft^2.
