interesting question. running the clothesline (vs facing the clothes)
north-south is usually better in warmer weather, but it depends a bit
on the location. near phila an ew-running clothesline gets 1,000 btu/ft^2
of sun per day from the south in january and 190 from the north, a total
of 1190. an ns gets 420 from the east and 430 from the west, a total
of 850, so ew is better.
in feb it's 1340 for ew vs 1130 for ns, so ew is still better.
from may through september ns is better. in june, an ew clothesline
gets 1400 btu/ft^2 of solar heat, but ns gets 1050 from the east
in the morning and another 1050 from the west in the afternoon,
so ns clothes get 50% more sun, if we leave them out all day.
in anchorage ak, ew clotheslines do better from april through aug.
orientation doesn't matter from nov through jan in barrow ak,
when there's no sun at all, but ns clotheslines do better
from april through september.
