i guess i shoulda said "cooling tower losses," which taken together with
smaller transmission losses amount to twice the delivered electrical power.
either way, it's an f-ing ripoff, thermodynamically-speaking, compared to
small-scale cogeneration. some hvac criminals almost restore the energy
balance (an unnatural act, at great expense) by transforming 30% of the
original fuel's heating value back into 100% with heat pumps...
