with individual cross links (i'd use the same wire size as the string
interconnects, so a string with a high resistance unit can still share
the load), it seems to me that we can identify a high series resistance
battery as one with less current flow during charge and discharge, and
a leaky one with low internal parallel resistance by a) its larger current
flow during charge, or b) its draw from the rest of the batteries when
there is no external load during a short programmed off-time in the
60 hz battery bank discharge cycle.
since batteries usually degrade slowly, monitoring their health could be
a very low priority task for an existing inverter microcomputer.
