abstract

the photovoltaic still is a device that uses the evaporation of
sea water to cool solar cells, to make the photovoltaic cells
operate more efficiently while at the same time condensing
the water vapor into fresh water. we have succeeded in constructing
and testing the first prototype pv/still. the small, 30 cm by 125 cm
device has a rated electric output of only 18 watts, but is of
sufficient size to demonstrate the concept of using evaporative
cooling to increase the electrical output of a 2 to 1 concentrator
photovoltaic device, while at the same time condensing the water vapor
to recover fresh water from sea water. preliminary measurements
made of the performance of the still show the cell temperature
dropping after introduction of the sea water and the production of
distilled water.  the concentrated brine is removed separately and
evaporated to recover the sea salt.
